Silverline® Antimicrobial External Ventricular Catheters

Silverline® Catheters are laced with less than 1% of small particles of silver and an unsoluble silver salt. Silver ions are a strong antiseptic with a broad spectrum. Should a resistancy to silver develop under the influence of the silver ions, the antibiotic therapy will still be possible.

The small particles have a large specific surface resulting in the release of silver ions in antiseptic concentration on the surface of the catheter.

The silver salt starts to release silver ions in antiseptic concentration immediately after placement of the catheter. The release of silver ions from the silver particles starts several hours later, when the ion release from the silver salt slows down. The release of silver ions from the silver particles then continues over a long interval.

Silver inactivates the enzyme systems with SH-groups of the cell wall that are active in the transmembraneous energy metabolism. Silver ions block the breathing chain of the bacteria.

In an in-vitro study conducted by Dipl.-Biol. Regina Zschaler Silverline® Catheters could demontrate their ability to kill

- Staph. aureus,
- Staph. epidermidis,
- methicillin resistant Staphylococcus,
- E. coli,
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa,

- Clostridium difficile,
- Acinetobacter baumannii,
- Streptococcus intermedius,
- Candida albicans, and
- Candida glabrata

in a spectacular manner.

The Silverline® ventricular catheter made of antimicrobial radiopaque polyurethane or silicone is inserted into one of the ventricles of the brain. Accessories that come with the device include a stylet, a suture clamp, a Luer-Lock connector, and a metal trocar.

° The slotted suture clamp is used for fixation to the skin.
° The Luer-Lock connector is connected to the external ventricular drainage kit.
° The trocar is used for tunneling.
° The catheter is outfitted with lettered marks.
° The stylet is used for stiffening during insertion.

The Silverline® ventricular catheter with its hollow stylet allows precise positioning in the lateral ventricle. The hollow stylet is equipped with holes that correspond to the holes in the catheter. Flow of CSF out of the stylet indicates a correct position in the ventricle. A turn of 90 degress of the stylet shuts off the flow of CSF.

External Ventricular Drainage Catheter with Bolt Fixation

The ventricular catheter is fixed in the bone by means of a bolt. After making a burr hole and opening the dura the probe is placed in the ventricle with the bolt in place in the upper region of the catheter.
Then the bolt is slid down to the burr hole and screwed into the bone. Finally the probe is fixed in the bolt with the clamping nut. The Luer-Lock connector is placed in the drainage tube and connected to a drainage kit.
